In this tutorial, we’ll learn all about workspaces in Photoshop. A workspace is a preset layout for the various elements that make up Photoshop’s interface. Workspaces determine which of Photoshop’s panelsare displayed on your screen and how those panels are arranged. A workspace can also change which tools are available in the Toolbar and how the Toolbar is organized. Workspaces may include […]
We’ll start with your basic copy and paste method. Then, we’ll learn how to duplicate a layer from one document into another. Finally, we’ll look at three ways to drag and drop an image between documents. We’ll learn how to drag and drop images between tabbed documents, between documents in a multi-document layout, and between two floating document windows. Once you’ve […]
Opening Images Into Photoshop I’ll start by opening a couple of images into Photoshop. Since this tutorial continues from the previous tutorial, I’ll use the same images again. Here, I’ve used Adobe Bridge to navigate to a folder containing my three images. Rather than opening all three at once into Photoshop, I’ll start by opening just two […]
Opening Images Into Photoshop Before we look at tabbed and floating documents, let’s first open some images into Photoshop. Here I’ve used Adobe Bridge to navigate to a folder containing three photos. I want to open all three of them at once into Photoshop. To do that, I’ll click on the image on the left to select it. […]
The Default “Essentials” Workspace Before we begin, let’s first make sure that the panels I’m seeing on my screen are the same as what you’re seeing on your screen. To do that, we’ll quickly reset Photoshop’s default workspace. A workspace determines which of Photoshop’s panels are displayed on your screen, and how those panels are arranged. […]
Some Quick Toolbar Basics By default, the Toolbar in Photoshop is located along the left of the interface. I’ve darkened the rest of the interface in the screenshot to make the Toolbar easier to see (it’s way over on the left): Photoshop’s interface showing the Toolbar (highlighted) along the left. Selecting The Tools Each icon […]
The Photoshop Toolbar In the previous tutorial in this series, we learned all about the Toolbar in Photoshop. The Toolbar is where Photoshop stores all of its various tools, from selection tools to editing tools, type tools, shape tools, navigation tools, and more. There are so many tools, in fact, that not all of them can be displayed […]
The Photoshop Toolbar As we learned in the previous Getting To Know The Photoshop Interface tutorial, Photoshop’s Toolbar is located along the left of the screen: The Toolbar in Photoshop. Single Or Double Column Toolbar By default, the Toolbar appears as a long, single column. It can be expanded into a shorter, double column by clicking the double […]
In this tutorial, we begin our chapter on Photoshop’s interface with a quick, general tour of the main features the interface has to offer. There’s lots that we can do with Photoshop, and over the years, Photoshop has grown into a massive program. But the interface itself is actually quite simple. In fact, there’s really […]
Here’s a photo I’ve opened that has some issues with perspective. If you look closely, you’ll notice that instead of appearing vertically straight as it does in real life, the hotel seems to be tilting in on itself as it rises upward, making the top appear more narrow than the bottom. The smaller building to […]
As with the previous tutorial, you can easily follow along here using any image of your own. Here’s the photo I’ll be working with (outdoor portrait photo from Adobe Stock): The original image. Credit: Adobe Stock. I’ll start by selecting Photoshop’s Crop Tool from the Toolbar along the left of the screen: Selecting the Crop Tool from the Toolbar. […]

This is lesson 10 of 10 in Chapter 2 – Opening Images Into Photoshop. Let’s get started! How To Close A Single Image Here we see that I currently have a single image open in Photoshop: An image open in Photoshop CC. Photo credit: Steve Patterson. To close a single image, go up to the File menu in […]
This is lesson 9 of 10 in Chapter 2 – Opening Images into Photoshop. Let’s get started! Step 1: Make Your Initial Image Adjustments In Lightroom As with the previous tutorial, I won’t be covering Lightroom or Photoshop in any great detail here so we can focus our attention on how to move JPEG files between […]
Lightroom was designed primarily as a raw image editor, but it can also work with non-raw files (JPEG, TIFF and PSD files). However, in this tutorial, we’ll look specifically at raw files. There’s a slight but important difference between moving raw and non-raw files from Lightroom to Photoshop, so we’ll cover non-raw files in the next […]
The best way to open images into Camera Raw is by using Adobe Bridge, so that’s what I’ll be using here. If you’re not yet familiar with Adobe Bridge, I covered the basics, including how to install Bridge, in the previous How To Open Images From Adobe Bridge tutorial. Be sure to check that one out before you […]
This tutorial picks up where the previous one left off, so if you’re not yet familiar with Adobe Bridge or you’re not sure how to install it, you’ll want to check out the previous How To Open Images From Bridge tutorial. This is lesson 6 of 10 in Chapter 2 – Opening Images into Photoshop. Opening Images Into […]
How To Install Adobe Bridge CC In Photoshop CS6 and earlier, Adobe Bridge installed automatically with Photoshop. But now that Adobe has switched everything over to the Creative Cloud, that’s no longer the case. Bridge is still included with every Creative Cloud subscription, but even if you’ve installed Photoshop CC, Bridge CC needs to be […]
When we launch Photoshop CC, we’re presented with the new Start screen, or known officially as the Start workspace. If you’ve already opened one or more images, they’ll appear as thumbnails in the center of the screen: The Start screen in Photoshop CC showing thumbnails of recently-opened files. If this is the first time you’ve launched Photoshop […]
You may have noticed that I’ve been writing “raw” in small letters and “JPEG” in caps, and there’s a reason for it. With most file formats, the letters in the format’s name actually stand for something. In this case, the term “JPEG” is short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the organization that […]
