Google’s Failed Products

Google has launch hundreds of its product and become the gaint company in 2020. But with the passage of time this company also closed its many project/products. In this article We will discuss Google’s Failed Products that has been closed time by time.

Here’s the list of Google’s Failed Products/products:

  1. Google Wave (2010 – 2012).
    Google launched this product in 2010 to defeat Slack which is a proprietary instant messaging platform developed by Slack Technologies. Google closed this project in 2012
  2. Orkut (2004 – 2014).
    Google launched this project in 2004 to compete Facebook. Orkut gets a higher spot than the others because it enjoyed a brief popularity in Brazil and India. Google Shut down it in 2014.
  3. Google Plus (2011 – 2019).
    Google Plus (or Google+) launched in 2011, but never gained popularity. Google + shows most high profiled project of company among Google’s Failed Products. Google + gives answer to facebook for a very long time but did not get so popularity in market. Google stopped supporting Google Plus project and dhutdown it in 2019. This was the most expensive failure that google has to bear.
  4. Google Talk (2005 – 2017).
    Google launched this project in 2005. It was the first and probably best messaging app of Google as it was free and integrated into Google Mail. It lets user to send and receive messages within Google’s email client from any device. There were also Google Talk apps for Android and Windows operating system. Google shut down this project in 2017
  5. Google Hangout (2013)
    Google Hangouts is a communication software product developed by Google. Originally a feature of Google+, Hangouts became a stand-alone product in 2013, when Google also began integrating features from Google+ Messenger and Google Talk into Hangouts. Hangouts started as a feature within Google Plus that was strictly for video chats. However, facing competition from the likes of Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and others. It could have been Facebook Live or Twitch.
  6. Google Answers (2002 – 2006)
    Google Answers was an online knowledge market offered by Google from 2002 to 2006. This service was remained in operation until late December 2006. Previous Questions and Answers were still publicly viewable. A user posted a question along with how much they would pay for an answer, where payment ranged from $2 to $200. Google shut down this project otherwise it could have been Quora today.
  7. Google Catalogs Search (2011 – 2015).
    Google Catalogs was a shopping application for tablet computers, which was produced by Google in August 2011. Google Catalogs delivered virtual catalogs to users from merchants or retailers. Those retailers realized they were better off having their own apps. They left using Google Catalogs and developed their own apps. Today Google catalogs search could have been Pinterest.
  8. Dodgeball (2007-2009)
    Dodgeball is a location-based social networking software provider for mobile devices. Google acquired it in 2005, but the team left in 2007. Google shut down the service in 2009, the same year Foursquare (also co-founded by Dennis Crowley) was started. It could have been FourSquare or a related social networking site.
  9. Google Notebook.
    It was a free online application offered by Google. It allowed users to save and organize clips of information while conducting research online. It was a browser-based tool that permitted a user to write notes, clip text and images. It also had a feature to save links from pages during a browser session. The information was saved to an online “notebook” with sharing and collaboration features. Notebooks could be made “public”, or visible to others. It also could be used to collaborate with a list of users (either publicly or privately) – Wikipedia.
  10. Google Page Creator.
    Google Page Creator was a website that provided creation and hosting service. It was a tool for basic website design. It didnt requir any HTML knowledge. In September 2008, Google announced that it will not accept new sign-ups request for page creation. The service was shut down in 2009. All published data (pages) were transferred to Google Sites. – Wikipedia
  11. Google Video (2005 – 2012).
    It wasn’t YouTube. Google Video was a free platform. A user could upload video clips for the whole world to see. At that time, YouTube was so much popular. Google Video came up against YouTube. There were no copitition between YouTube and Google Videos.  Finally Google shutdown its project in 2012 and bought YouTube.
  12. Google Glass. It should have waited until it was Google Contact Lens before it launched in the consumer market.
  13. Google Knol (2008 – 2012).
    Knol launched in 2008. to include user-written articles on a range of topics. The project was led by Udi Manber, a Google vice president of engineering.
  14. Google URL Shortener (2009 – 2019)
    It was launched in December 2009.  Google discontinued this service in 2019. .
  15. Google Allo (2016 – 2019)
    Google Allo was an messaging mobile app. The app used phone numbers as identifiers. It allows users to exchange messages, files, voice notes, and images.
  16. Google Nexus (2010 – 2016)
    Google Nexus was a line of consumer electronic devices that ran the Android operating system.
  17. Picasa (2002 – 2016)
    Picasa is a discontinued, cross-platform image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, integrated with a now defunct photo-sharing website, originally created by a company named Lifescape in 2002
